I do recall, a few years back in 2015, [XYZ] want revamp their complete [ABC] legacy platform that has been running for last 10+ years so that business can have to control the products and features, and have to rely less on IT projects, thus reducing the time to market of launch new features, products, and services. The project executive, my manager, and upper [PQR] sales group wanted to push for the usage of [PQR] products and services. I was given 3 days to prepare the overall architecture of the solution using those products. Knowing the current system, it is working and needed platform creatures and requirements, The use of a couple of [MLN] solutions for user management and business process workflow implementations were not well thought so. The individual products themselves were bloated and were not a good fit for the requirements at hand.
Also, the integration was also presenting as a challenge as these were silos. However, I worked on the architecture, presented to my manager, I disagreed with the choices and I asked them that I can present them with alternatives. Nevertheless, the team was adamant to take it forward and presented to [LMN] but the approach was not well received and the project cost was way off the competitor has bided. Realizing that, I was asked to work on the revised solution with quick turn around. I did that and that was presented to [XYZ] which was well received and we won the project work.
If my management made a decision that I don’t agree with, I would first try to understand the decision, its implication and find out the rationale behind the decision. May be perhaps that I don’t have the complete picture of why that decision was taken, or perhaps I am not able to get the rationale behind the decision. I would meet with the management and learn more about it and ask clarifying questions. If need I will talk with peers to get a better understanding. Once I know, I would evaluate it objectively and subjectively and see which part I don’t agree with. I would come up with reasoning to challenge the decision or suggest amendments to make the decision more favorable to all parties.
Irrespective of the above efforts, whether or not the decision is to agree, respecting authority and understanding that its best for the overall company, I would try to keep my judgment aside and work on the guidance of that decision.
